I am trying to objective and it is hard. Ola was musical. She played several instruments. They burnt in the fire in 1941. Ola was a terrible housekeeper and that with the fact that she had small chicken in the upstairs bedroom, with a heater, probably caused the fire. They lost everything and basically camped out in a small building the rest of her life. Maude did move Ola into town with them after Lee's death. She was very much against "the Church", even though she had brothers who were ministers.
I admired Grandma Ola. She had a ready smile. She was a go getter. On the day of the house fire she had baked a cake and left it setting by the open kitchen window to cool. As the fire was engulfing the house, she remembered the cake, had it rescued through the open window and served "refreshments" to the people trying to help control the fire.
A booklet "Scenic Madison County, Iowa -- Historical Significance" published by the Historical Society in 1961 included the following table prayer that Ola said was said by the Henry Gideon family:
"Smile on us in tender mercy,
Bless the nourishment of Thy kind hand,
Bless us and save us for Christ's sake. Amen."
