FORMER PUBLISHER OF PUBLIC LEDGER SUCCUMBS ON DUTY
Philadelphia (AP) -- Lt. Col. Robert Cresswell, 46, last publisher of the old Philadelphia Evening Public Ledger died in England of a streptococcus infection, according to information received by his mother.
Mrs. Charles T Cresswell said she was notified last week that her son was seriously ill and unconscious. A letter saying her son was dead arrived from a friend a few days later.
Cresswell swerved as a captain of field artillery, 79th Division, in France and Russia, during the first World War. He re-entered the Army as a lieutenant colonel on March 29, 1943.
Graduated from Princeton University in 1919, Cresswell joined the New York Herald Tribune staff in 1922 as a reporter. He later served as circulation manager, and treasurer of the New York Tribune, Inc. He headed a company that bought the Ledger from the Cyrus H K Curtis estate on Jan 1, 1941. Publication was terminated Jan 5, 1942, after unsuccessful efforts to re-organize.
Captain in the First War
During the First World War he served as a captain of field artillery in tile Seventy-ninth Division in France and Russia. He reent6red the service last March 19. and in May was sent to London on a mission for the Office of Strategic Services. Colonel Cresswell was born on May .29, 1897, in Philadelphia. where his parents, Mrs. cress well^ and the late Charles Th0ms0n Cresswell, were socially prominent. He was educated at St. Paul's School, Concord, N. H., and Princeton University. In his senior year in college he entered the Army, returning to the university after the1 war and being graduated in 1920. The next year he married the former Catherine R. Henriques, the union ending later in divorce. In 1922 Colonel Cresswen became a reporter on The Herald Tribune, and served successiveIy as special writer, assistant eity editor, copy reader, assistant promotion manager and circulation manager. He was named treasurer and a director in 1932 and remained in these posts until 1940, when he came to Philadelphiai Es-Director of Press WireIess He also was a former director of Press Wireless, Inc., and of the News Traffic Board, Ltd., and former secretary of the conference board of the United Newspapers Magazine Corporation, which publishes the magazine This Week. Colonel Cresswell was a member of the council of the Erinceton University Press and of the board of editorial direction of The Princeton Alumni Weekly. His other business connections had included serving as president and a director of 485 Park Avenue, Inc., a director and member of the execlitive committee of the American Gas and EIectric Company and secretary and a director of 133 East Eightieth Street, Inc. Colonel Cresswell's clubs included the Century -4ssociation, the University and Racquet and Tennis of New York, the Philadelphia Racquet, Midday and Downtown, Ivy of Princeton and the Northeast Harbor Fleet, in Maine. He also was a trustek of St. John's Guild. I Surviving besides his mother are two sons, Pvt. Robert Cresswell Jr., who is at Combat Engineers School at the University of Maryland, and Pvt. Henry Cresswell, who is at Fort Benning, Ga.
