Ruth Margaret Van Deer, 89, formerly of Alden
Ruth Margaret Van Deer, age 89, formerly of Alden, died Thursday, May 13, 2004, at St. John's Lutheran Home in Albert Lea.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 18, at the United Methodist Church in Alden. The Rev. Sharon Nelson will officiate. Visitation will be held at Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home in Wells from 4 to 7 p.m. today, and one hour prior to services on Tuesday. Interment will be in the Alden Cemetery, Alden.
Ruth M. Van Deer was born Aug. 17, 1914, the daughter of William and Minnie (Getzkow) Dornfeldt in Wells. She was baptized and confirmed at the Wells Evangelical Church. She graduated from the Wells High School in 1932. She did her teachers training at Wells Normal School and taught country school for six years. Ruth married John Van Deer on Feb. 14, 1939. They farmed in Alden Township, Freeborn County, until 1976 when they retired and moved to Alden, spending six months each year in Florida. Ruth moved to Oak Park Place in Albert Lea, August 2001, where she resided until moving to St. John's Lutheran Home, April 2004. She was a member of Alden United Methodist Church, U.M.W., circles, and Good Cheer Class. She was a member of Royal Neighbors and Alden Senior Citizens. Ruth enjoyed garage sales and "gadding about" with her friends and family. If someone said, "Lets go!" she could be ready at a moments notice.
Ruth is survived by three children: Carole Lea King of Chesapeake, Va., Bill Van Deer and wife Ellie (Habben) of Kiester, and Keith Van Deer and wife Susan (Stoneback) of Cody, Wyo.; grandchildren: Kristine Shields of Florida, Joel King and wife Pattie of Chesapeake, Va., Allison Schultz and husband Brad of Chesapeake, Va., Sherrie Wakefield and husband Lance of Pemberton, William John Van Deer and wife Janet of Walters, Richard Van Deer and wife Kelly of Cody, Wyo., and Traci Kieper of Rawlins, Wyo.;13 great-grandchildren: Jennifer, Carole and April Shields, Taylor Schultz, Whitney and Kaleena Clark, Caitlyn, Kylie and Carter Wakefield, Alex Van Deer, Victor and Ashley Stafne, and Taylor Jade Van Deer; one sister-in-law, Violet Schied of Sarasota, Fla.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John, on Oct. 18, 1983; her twin sister, Ruby (Mrs. Arnold Tiede) on Dec. 25, 1983; son-in-law, David W. King on Nov. 25, 2002. Nine half sisters and three half brothers also preceded her: Mrs. Henry (Anna Dornfeldt) Schroeder, Mrs. Ernest (Lena) Pofahl, Mrs. Fred (Larvella) Miller, Mrs. Chris (Hannah) Schustag, Mrs. Otto (Lena Fredericks) Wendt, Mrs. Louis (Clara) Huper, Mrs. John (Selma) Jones, Mrs. Ernest (Lydia) Thisius, Miss Nelda Fredericks, Ed Dornfeldt, William Fredericks, and Lenard Fredericks.
